A Wandering Minstrel: Marion’s Intimate Memoir of Guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton and the Early Sound of Hawkwind

REVIEWS & COMMENTS FOR A WANDERING MINSTREL – AUGUST 2025

FROM IAN ABRAHAMS

In the mid-80s there was only one musician I wanted to be - not Hendrix, not Page,

not Clapton - I wanted to be Huw Lloyd-Langton. I saw him any number of times in

South Wales in those years, either as part of Hawkwind or solo with the Lloyd-

Langton group. I never knew him, but he always seemed approachable and likeable

and, well, one of rock music's good guys.

In a different and more just universe, Huw would have been a huge star. But he was

loved and those who knew *knew* just how good he was.

This is a touching memoir, heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure.

Anyone with an interest in Hawkwind or, more generally, in the life of this most

admirable of Wandering Minstrels needs to check it out.

[Philip Gwynne Jones, author of the ‘Venice’ detective series]

Just finished this gem of a book. If I could only describe the story Marion tells in one

word… Delightful!

It’s the story of Huw and Marion’s life together, which of course is the story of a

professional musician, or ‘jobbing’ musician as Marion describes him. Huw fans will

be thrilled to read about the various bands he was in, a good number of which didn’t

last long or release anything. But it’s fascinating to read every detail.

Another word I could describe this story as… heartwarming. Oh, there’s sorrow and

hardship to be sure, and Marion is candid. But the big picture is a positive attitude

toward life, the couple’s love for each other is palpable, and they were blessed with

many good friends over their 44 years together. I got so absorbed I read the book in

two sittings. Recommended…

[Jerry Krantiz, former editor and owner, Aural Innovations]

It’s one of those books that you can’t put down, it’s absolutely fascinating. Brilliantly

written, talking about [Marion and Huw’s] early days, their families and how they met

and the stuff they used to get up to in London… the people that they knew … I would

thoroughly recommend it.

[Harry Bell, ‘The Hawk Hour’, Radio Skye]

Marion Lloyd Langton has poured her heart and soul into this ... reads with the

enthusiasm for a full life lived by both partners. Marion's story is as fascinating as

was Huw's. As a fellow guitar tutor the stories of past students really hit home with

me. Thank you, Marion, for making this available. Thank you, Huw, for all the music

and magical memories.

Great book and a fitting tribute to a great guitarist and person.

Got my copy, up to chapter 14. So much info in there, the bands, the albums more

details than I knew before. It's about Marion and Huws relationship, work and family.

Marion is a remarkable woman after leaving school with no qualifications, has

achieved so much. Thanks, Marion, for such a good read, good luck with it.

A rattling good read... Really interesting to read about the non-Hawkwind side of

Huw's career.

and publishing this wonderful book.

Finished the book a few days ago ... loved it... It was great to read about all the

bands that Huw played with... Can't deny, there was a page near the end where i

shed a tear... the book is a great tribute to one of the best guitarists I had the

pleasure to watch...many times!

This book is a lovely insight into the lives and love shared by Huw and Marion Lloyd

Langton. I found out so many things I had no idea about that made me both laugh

and cry. A really good read, I thoroughly recommend it.

PUBLISHING HUW LLOYD-LANGTON’S MEMOIR

NEWS ON PUBLISHING HUW LLOYD-LANGTON’S MEMOIR AND RELEASE OF A LIMITED EDITION 7” VINYL SINGLE.

Marion Lloyd-Langton announces the forthcoming release of her memoir of the much-missed Huw Lloyd-Langton: 'A Wandering Minstrel'. Huw Lloyd Langton that much loved and distinctive lead guitarist, might be best known for his stints with Space Rock legends Hawkwind and his time in 70s supergroup Widowmaker, but there's a whole lot more to the story of this road gypsy, this wandering minstrel, than just those two famous associations.

In a life dedicated to music, he touched the lives of so many fellow musicians and fans alike, with his easy going approachability, and with his wonderful musical dexterity. 'A Wandering Minstrel' is Huw's life, told by his soulmate and wife, Marion, and the story of their life together. it's related with love and honesty and is by turns heartwarming and heartbreaking, liberally interspersed with memories and anecdotes from many of Huw's friends and musical comrades and illustrated with never before published photographs and Huw's very own caricatures alongside a compendium of press cuttings and tour posters, this book is a proper homage to a cherished Maestro.

Due for release in paperback through Amazon KDP on 28th July 2025 (Links to follow!) 'A Wandering Minstrel' is written by Marion with assistance from Hawkwind biographer and music journalist Ian Abrahams. An eBook version will be available later in the Autumn.

Marion is also making available a limited edition (100 pressings only) Lloyd-Langton 7" single, details of how to order will be posted soon....its certain to become a collectors item!
